Here's some backgrounding reading material

General Links

There is a Wikipedia entry for Mozambique, along with the CIA Worldbook entry and also the BBC's country profile. And Stanford University provide a very comprehensive list of general Mozambique links. There are various forums around. The most popular are in Portuguese, but this one is in English.

Travel journalism

Joshua Kurlantzick, for The New York Times, produced a thoughtful and fair report on Mozambique as a travel destination in May 2005.  But you will have to register with the website, which is free, and also navigate yourself past their irritating adverts.  You'll see a reference in the piece to the author getting attacked by Mozzies when staying on Barra.  He was staying at Barra Lodge and, as we explain elsewhere on the site, Kaya MJ is situated well away from the mangrove swamp which  produces most of the bug problems you might encounter at Barra.

Because our holiday home is situation up on a sand dune we find that our mosquito problem is relatively small.

After reading the New York Times piece, do click on the multi media slide show for some good pictures of the place by Jehad Nga.

There's a nice straightforward piece on Inhambane and Barra by Robin Daily, published in Getaway magazine back in December, 2003.

Or you can read Paul\'s slightly cringe making piece in The Guardian from February 2004, when he worked at the paper. This was a report for the Guardian's travel section after we had spent a month traveling around Mozambique as a family.

Blogs

Here's a little mention about whale sharks and diving in Travel News Blog and here's a guy called Richard writing from Tofu on getjealous.com.  There are some pictures on Rash's Seeking Goats blog and here are the photos of a guy called Nilesh who spent his honeymoon at Barra.
